What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot:

Styling Tips and Inspiration

Family Photoshoot at Castaway Island Preserve, Jacksonville, FL

Hey there, busy mama! So, you’ve booked your family photo session, and now you’re wondering, “What on earth should we wear?” Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered. Choosing the right outfits can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

Here are some simple, stress-free tips to help you and your family look amazing and feel comfortable during your photoshoot.

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of dressing everyone in identical outfits, aim for a coordinated look that complements one another. Think about selecting a cohesive color palette with varying shades and textures. For example, soft neutrals paired with earthy tones or cool blues mixed with gentle pastels can create a timeless look.

2. Choose Colors That Work Well with Natural Light

Since most of my sessions are outdoors in beautiful natural light, I recommend sticking to soft, muted tones that photograph beautifully. Think light beige, dusty pink, sage green, and creamy whites. These colors not only flatter all skin tones but also blend seamlessly with nature’s backdrop.

3. Keep the Location in Mind

If we’re shooting at the beach, light and airy outfits with flowing fabrics work wonderfully. For nature parks or urban settings, rich, earthy tones or warm neutrals can be gorgeous. Always consider how your outfits will look against the surroundings.

4. Embrace Comfort and Confidence

Above all, wear something you feel great in! If your kids are comfortable and able to move freely, they’ll be happier and more relaxed—making for more genuine, joyful photos. Avoid outfits that feel too tight or restrictive, especially for little ones.

5. Add Texture and Layers

Layers like cardigans, denim jackets, or scarves add dimension to your photos. Mixing textures—such as lace, knits, and denim—can create a visually appealing and cozy vibe that feels welcoming and natural.

6. Keep Patterns Minimal

While a little pattern can be fun, too much can be distracting. If you’re including patterns, keep them subtle and balanced with solid colors to maintain harmony.

7. Plan Ahead

Give yourself time to gather everyone’s outfits so you can adjust and coordinate as needed. And remember, you can always send me outfit options if you need help deciding!
